Description of the project:

Although they are less used, roofs and green façades are beginning to be a trend of urban architecture, reconciling aspects related to sustainable construction and the adaptation of cities to the effects of climate change. The project aims to develop and validate new coverage systems and green façades structured in expanded cork agglomerate (ICB), with an environmental and energy profile superior to those of conventional solutions and with high capacity of energetic personalization and pre-fabrication. In these systems, with ecological design, the ICB will simultaneously provide: Thermal insulation of the building; Drainage functions; Retention functions.

Objectives:

This project has as the main objective to develop new green cover and facade systems structured in expanded cork agglomerate (ICB). The aim is to study and develop these solutions in a sustainability perspective, aiming at the protection of resources, increasing the energy efficiency of buildings and mitigating some effects of climate change on urban space, such as the damping of flood peaks and the effects of heat waves.

Main Activities:

The project comprises a set of experimental and numerical studies: In a new the approach, living green facades will be studied using bioclimatic chambers; Characterization of the applied materials, for different volumetric masses and subject to different water contents; Evaluation of the system for its hydraulic permeability, water retention capacity and thermal conductivity; Analysis of the feasibility of integrating systems of roofs and green façades with other sustainability solutions; Development of numerical techniques to model, during the year, hydraulic flow and the hygrothermal and acoustic behavior of the new systems; Validation of theoretical models based on experimental results; A full-scale prototype will be built to serve as an experimental installation to validate the functional characteristics and standards of energy and environmental sustainability.

Other Information:

It is intended that the final product meets the following requirements: Present an eco-friendly design incorporating renewable and recyclable materials; Allow geometric customization; Be self-draining (without using synthetic screens); Autonomous capacity of water retention; High thermal performance; High acoustic performance. The solutions to be developed should still be economically competitive, allowing tangible advantages in terms of performance and ease of application, making it a viable alternative to solutions currently in the market.
